Philadelphia:  ‘Give Kids Sight Day’ where Philadelphia school children will get free eye checks and free glasses.  Saturday, April 14, 2012, 8:30am – 1:00pm.  Jefferson Hospital, Alumni Hall – 10th and Locust Streets (Center City)

BACKGROUND: Pennsylvania law requires that all school children be given an annual vision screening in school. At nearly 100 percent compliance, the School District of Philadelphia does an admirable job of making sure its students are checked.

Yet, 66 percent – 15,879 – of the students who failed their vision screening (2009-10) did not receive a follow-up eye exam with a doctor. This figure is up from 15,120 – 63 percent – during 2008-09.

To provide children with needed eye care and to increase the public’s awareness of the need, Eagles Youth Partnership and PCCY have teamed up with Wills Eye Institute for the third ‘Give Kids Sight Day.’

Parents will be bringing their uninsured and underinsured kids (approximately 26,000 Philadelphia children are uninsured) to Jefferson for free eye checks and free glasses courtesy of Eagles Youth Partnership and Wills Eye Institute. No appointments or insurance is necessary:

At ‘Sight Day’ 2010 – 1,392 children got their eyes checked and 595 received glasses.
