Budget Delay Foces Peak’s Little Angels to Cut Back, Stop Checks – Philadelphia Tribune – October 9, 2009

Anyone who doubts the hardship caused by the 100-day state budget impasse need only talk to daycare center owner Thelma Peake, who has not received her state funding since July.  For Peake, the president and owner of Peak’s Little Angels, a daycare center in Southwest Philadelphia, that means about 88 percent of her revenue just vanished, leaving her unable to pay employees; forced her to cut programs; put off expansion plans; and left the business with mounting bills and late fees. “We’re working off our emergency plan at this present time,” Peake said. “We will not be able to survive unless we find someone willing to fund our school.” Classes remain for the daycare’s 80 students, but paychecks for its 15 employees have not been cut in weeks. “I have employees who have been here since day one and they deserve their paychecks,” she said, but she’s simply unable to write them.  That means the impact ripples out. 阅读更多…
