BACKGROUND: Pennsylvania law requires that all school children be given an annual
vision screening in school. At 82 percent compliance, the School District of Philadelphia does an admirable job of making sure its students are checked. Yet, during the 2007-08 school year, 63 percent (13,834) of the students who failed their vision screening did not receive a follow-up eye exam with a doctor. To help the general public become more aware of children’s vision awareness, PCCY and Eagles Youth Partnership have teamed up with Wills Eye institute and The Eye Institute for ‘Give Kids Sight Day’.

Philadelphia school children can get free eye checks and free glasses during ‘Give Kids Sight Day’, on Saturday, November 21st. From 8:00am to 2:00pm. Parents can take their kids (up to 18-years old) to either of two locations: Wills Eye Institute at 9th and Walnut in Center City, and The Eye Institute at 12th and Godfrey in Oak Lane. No appointment is necessary! Giveaways, entertainment refreshments and prizes will be on hand, including a raffle for a pair of Eagles tickets! For more information about “Give Kids Sight Day” and to find an eye doctor any day of the year, contact PCCY at 215-563-5848 or go to www.childrenfirstpa.org/sightday.
