LAWRENCE PARK—The idea started when the son of play-writer Arden Kass came home from school one day.

“He came home and told me he’d be learning Spanish from Rosetta Stone and I literally thought he was kidding,” Kass said.

It turns out, Kass’ son did not have money for a Spanish teacher. Those types of jobs and resources have been on the chopping block in the last few years in Pennsylvania as lawmakers in Harrisburg continue to struggle to pass a state budget.

“What we want to see is that people are talking about it,” Kass says. “We want to spark conversation.”

Kass and her team are on a state-wide tour for a production called “School Play.” They stopped for a performance at Iroquois High School.

The play features a series of monologues all based on real-life interviews from students, teachers and parents affected by the budget impasse.

“We need to change the system but we need to sit up and care first,” co-creator/producer Seter Bauer says.

The free one-night local showing of the play, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews at sold-out performances last April at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, is part of a statewide tour that will also include showings in St. Marys, Johnstown, State College, Schuylkill Haven, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Reading, Allentown, Montgomery County, Bryn Mawr and Philadelphia.

The initiative is part of an education advocacy group called the Public Citizens for Children and Youth.
