Drama of Education Funding Hits the Local Stage in School Play – Wolf Performing Arts Center to Host Free One-Night Show on October 11th

BRYN MAWR (October 6, 2015) – Pennsylvania’s school funding crisis will take center stage in School Play at Wolf Performing Arts Center, 1240 Montrose Ave., Bryn Mawr, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11. The free one-night local showing of the play, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews at sold-out performances last April at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, is part of a statewide tour that will include showings in Erie, St. Marys, Johnstown, State College, Schuylkill Haven, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Reading, Allentown, Elkins Park and Blue Bell.

The timing of School Play could not be more relevant as the three-month-old budget standoff continues in Harrisburg, with new funding for education at the top of the agenda. The documentary-based live theatre production from playwrights Arden Kass and Seth Bauer, commissioned by Public Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY), uses the real voices of more than 100 Pennsylvanians to dramatize funding inequities among school districts across the state.

“State education budget cuts have devastated arts and other programs in our schools, which is why School Play is going on tour,” said Donna Cooper, executive director of PCCY. “The story of Pennsylvania’s school funding crisis needs to be told because every child deserves the chance to succeed.”

“Wolf Performing Arts Center is proud to present School Play,” Brandi Burgess, Community and Education Outreach Coordinator. “This beautifully crafted production sheds new light on the crises plaguing our schools, by offering true testimonies from affected educators, families, and students. We are especially thrilled for our young performers to witness this call to action, and be empowered to use their voices for change.”
