We are hoping that the spirit of generosity that blossoms in the holiday season carries on for children as the new administration takes the reins. Despite the extraordinary struggles facing far too many children, the incoming administration is wrapping up their policies in boxes that will undoubtedly make the lives of these children harder. 

Many faith traditions come together this month to reflect and celebrate, and people are guided by their beliefs to look out for the vulnerable, especially children. So many of us live out our values by giving back this time of year through food and clothing drives, delivering toys to kids in need, and cooking meals. While others are doing good, new leaders in the incoming administration are proposing cuts to programs that feed children, like SNAP and school meals. Denying children food is an anathema to many people of faith and good consciousness.  

Refusing to protect children from sickness also runs counter to many faiths and beliefs. Already, there’s a plan in place to cut Medicaid to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Regardless of the wisdom of those tax cuts, there can be no reasonable argument to cut health care for needy children and their parents. Any cut to Medicaid directly threatens the health of 40% of babies born in this country and reduces health care access for 40 million children.

So many Americans celebrate Christmas by putting creches on their mantels, praising those who gave shelter to Mary and Joseph. Yet, two men of extreme wealth and who own multiple homes worldwide, have a list of cuts to government spending that includes the meager federal resources that help house the poor. 

This holiday season we hope that every Pennsylvanian reflects on their principles and religious teachings, and fuels the work we will need to do in the months ahead to protect the little that is already in place to help every child thrive.
