SUMMARY:2024 Celebration of the Champions for Children honoring Vanguard
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Thursday\, May 16\, 2024\, Children First will shine a spotlight on Vanguard for being exceptional leaders in making a lifelong impact on the lives of children. In words\, deeds\, and with resources\, Vanguard has stepped up for every child to get what they deserve in life – a strong start.  \nFor decades\, Vanguard has been an unsung partner and champion with Children First and local and national early learning leaders to deliver on this belief. In the last six years alone\, the company has invested over $60 million to support the learning\, development\, and joy of children today. Vanguard uses the same steady and research-backed approach to steward the investments of more than 50 million people worldwide to pave the way for children\, regardless of race or zip code\, to have the access to high-quality child care and early learning experiences. \nWe know that there are many worthy causes and amazing regional leaders to honor\, but we urge you to join Children First as we honor Vanguard as the 2024 Champions for Children. SUMMARY:Mental Health Awareness Day\, Panel Discussion and Art Show
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn May 15\, join with us and hundreds of mental health advocates will march at the State Capitol building to call on lawmakers to invest more funding into mental health resources and professionals across the Commonwealth.   \nThe rally will include speeches from mental health leaders such as Representative Mike Schlossberg and former Deputy Secretary Joan Erney.  The rally will convene on the steps of the Capitol building at 1pm on Wednesday\, May 15th.  We are encouraging our partners and stakeholders to attend the rally\, and Children First will be hosting a special event for advocates following the rally at the nearby Susquehanna Art Museum.   \nOn exhibit at the museum is the I’m Fine project\, which is an exhibit of over 1\,000 masks made by people with mental health challenges to represent how we hide or minimize our emotions and mental health challenges.  The event will feature a panel discussion to highlight the need for increased resources and supports for young people’s mental health and explore the ways that art can be healing for young people. \nFor more information\, contact Kate Fox at katef@childrenfirstpa.com – also contact Kate if you can join us at the rally. \nIf you plan on attending the Art Show – see more information below and REGISTER FOR FREE HERE.  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:City Budget Advocacy Day press conference
DESCRIPTION: Budget Advocacy Day \nPhiladelphia Press Conference \nThis year\, Children First is doubling down on our budget advocacy in Philadelphia\, and we need your help! We have a new Mayor\, new City Council\, and new Council President\, which means it’s a good opportunity for our elected officals to make big moves to show Philly that they’re shepherding a fresh start for the City. Children First has put four budget asks on the table for the administration and council. We’ve already sent these asks to the Mayor and Councilmembers\, and now we have to follow up. \n\nIncreasing the share of property taxes going to the School District of Philadelphia from at least 55% to 58% so that\, with the projected growth in property taxes revenues from assessed value increases\, at least $100 million more is provided to the district from local revenue sources in a predictable and recurring manner.\nInvesting $2.5 million more for 250 new PHLpreK seats and providing sufficient city funds to match for Philly Pre-K programs the reimbursement rate for Pre-K Counts programs as proffered by the Governor.\nSustaining and expanding out-of-school time options for kids with an increase of $8.8 million for additional programming and hours at recreation centers\, a $2 million infusion for Philly Youth Sports Fund so they can serve 5\,000 more youth\, and ensuring sufficient funds of up to $38 million\, are available to preserve the 8\,000 OST slots currently funded with School District ARP funds.\nInvesting the full amount of cost savings associated with reduced juvenile incarceration in diversion and community-based alternatives\, an estimated at $4 million.\n\nREGISTER HERE to join us on March 20\, 2024 at 10am in the Caucus Room at \nPhiladelphia City Hall for this press conference.

SUMMARY:Kids Campaign Platform Release
DESCRIPTION:  \nThroughout the primary season\, we heard loud and clear that violence was the most important issue to be addressed by the next mayor\, and the Kids Campaign continues to hold that any long-term solution to violence centers kids. Philadelphia kids must be S.E.C.U.R.E. \nKids must have Safety\, Education\, Careers\, Uplift\, Recreation\, and a healthy Environment. \nThat’s why the coalition developed a Kids Platform for the 100th mayor that details concrete action steps the mayor can take in YEAR ONE to begin reducing violence in our city. Kids can have better schools\, more afterschool and summer programs\, more job opportunities\, and more resources to support their mental health \nWhoever you support as mayor\, come to our Kids Campaign Platform Launch to see how actions centering children and youth is the surest way to make Philadelphia safe. \nRegister Here \nDate: Monday\, October 23\, 2023\nTime: 2pm to 4pm\nLocation: Columbia North YMCA\,1400 North Broad Street\, Phila.

SUMMARY:Big Thing 2.0 - A Day for Updates and BIG Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Breaking through antiquated and under-resourced systems to make the lives of children better isn’t easy to do.  But when you shared your lived experiences\, ideas\, and passion with us last year\, we began a BIG conversation and BIG work to change that for Pennsylvania’s kids. \nTogether we decided we wanted new models for mental health and career education for our kids\, and a teacher pipeline that insists on diversity and cultural competence. \nIf you joined us last year\, let’s reconvene\, hear what we’ve done to advance those BIG ideas\, and get updated on some BIG changes underway at the state to help us achieve these BIG ideas.  If you are interested in helping us achieve the goals above\, email nelidas@childrenfirstpa.com to request an invitation to the conference.  Otherwise\, previous participants can REGISTER HERE. \nWe are also excited to hear from Alex Briscoe who leads California Children’s Trust (CCT) and learn how they convinced the state to “decolonize” the mental health service delivery system in ways that systemically tackle racial and access barriers that give EVERY child access to quality mental health services.
